LinkedIn Now Factors ‘Dwell Time’ Into Content Distribution Algorithm, Which Could Be Bad News for ‘Broetry’

LinkedIn has this week published an overview of its new ‘dwell time’ metric, which is now being factored into its feed algorithm, which defines what each user sees on the platform. Dwell time, as it sounds, calculates how long a LinkedIn user spends looking at an update or link. As explained by LinkedIn: “At a high level, each update viewed on the feed generates two types of dwell time. First, there is dwell time “on the feed,” which starts measuring when at least half of a feed update is visible as a member scrolls through their feed. Second, there is dwell time “after the click,” which is the time spent […]

Google has added new support link options for business profiles which will enable organizations to list gift card and donations links on their Google My Business listings in order to call on people for assistance amid the COVID-19 lockdowns. As explained by Google: “With this feature, merchants will be able to add a donation link, gift card link or both to their profile. They can also share a personal message in their post to inform customers how funds will be put to use.”  The links will be displayed wherever people can view your Google My Business profile, including in search listings and in maps. Twitter Looks to Lead Broader Remote Work Shift, With Staff Free to Keep Working From Home Indefinitely

As more businesses begin to look to the future, and a return to regular operations after the COVID-19 lockdowns, Twitter has announced that it will let its staff work from home indefinitely – forever if they like – even after the restrictions are lifted. As per Twitter: “We were uniquely positioned to respond quickly and allow folks to work from home given our emphasis on decentralization and supporting a distributed workforce capable of working from anywhere. The past few months have proven we can make that work. So if our employees are in a role and situation that enables them to work from home and they want to continue to do so […]

Facebook Funds New Pro-Technology Advocacy Group to Improve Relations with US Politicians

Remember that time, just after Donald Trump was elected, that speculation was rising around a potential presidential run by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in 2020? That was an interesting side note to the 2016 Election result. In an unrelated, but sort of related, development, The Washington Times has reported that Facebook is one of several tech companies behind a new pro-tech advocacy group in Washington called ‘American Edge’. American Edge aims to represent ‘American innovators’ in the tech sector, with the goal of improving the image of tech companies among politicians. As reported by Business Insider: “American Edge is registered as a non-profit, which enables it to raise money and spend on […]

Facebook Publishes Latest Update on Content Removals, Fake Accounts, Government Requests and More

Facebook has published the latest version of its Community Standards Enforcement Report, which outlines all of the policy and rule violations that Facebook has taken action on, across both Facebook and Instagram, over the preceding three months. The report now covers 12 policy areas on Facebook, and 10 on Instagram, with this latest version providing more insight into Instagram content specifically. As explained by Facebook: “The report introduces Instagram data in four issue areas: Hate Speech, Adult Nudity and Sexual Activity, Violent and Graphic Content, and Bullying and Harassment. For the first time, we’re also sharing data on the number of appeals people make on content we’ve taken action against […]

LinkedIn Launches its Own Polls Option to Facilitate More Engagement

LinkedIn Launches its Own Polls Option to Facilitate More Engagement

After it was spotted in testing last month, LinkedIn has now officially launched its new native polls option, providing another way to gather feedback, and boost engagement on the platform. As you can see in the video, LinkedIn polls function pretty much the same as they do on other platforms – you select the ‘Create a Poll’ option within the post composer, type in your question, and enter up to four answer options. You then choose the poll’s duration (between 24 hours and up to two weeks), add a note to your post, then publish. LinkedIn polls can be shared with your connections (subject to LinkedIn’s algorithm), specific groups, or to […]

Facebook Provides New Ad Placement Controls to Better Manage Potential Brand Association

Facebook Provides New Ad Placement Controls to Better Manage Potential Brand Association

Facebook has announced a new set of brand safety controls, which will give brands more control over their ad placements across Facebook’s various ad streams. The new options have been in testing with selected partners over the last few months – back in November, Facebook outlined a range of coming options designed to better enable advertisers to control where their ads appear across Facebook’s various ad delivery networks. The main element here is the expansion of publisher whitelists, both for Audience Network and in-stream ads. Whitelists enable advertisers to select specific publishers and content types against which their ads can be shown – as opposed to block lists, which eliminate certain placements outright. […]

Twitter Officially Launches New ‘Retweets with Comments’ Listings on iOS

You may have noticed this in your retweet display over the past few weeks, but now, Twitter’s making it official – on iOS at least. From now on, your retweet count will include both basic retweets AND retweets with comments, and you’ll also be able to see which is which in a new listing within the tweet detail. As noted, Twitter’s been testing the new listings over the past few weeks, with the update looking to address a commonly noted annoyance with Twitter’s displayed engagement stats. Up till now, Twitter has actually considered a retweet with comment to be a unique tweet in its own right, so it deliberately hasn’t included […]

Instagram Adds New Anti-Bullying Measures, Including Bulk Comment Actions and Mention Controls

Instagram has announced some new tools to give users more control over their on-platform experience, and reduce the impact of trolls and abusive actions within the app. First off, Instagram’s rolling out a new bulk comment removal process, which will make it easier to manage your post comment streams. As explained by Instagram: “We know it can feel overwhelming to manage a rush of negative comments, so we’ve been testing the ability to delete comments in bulk, as well as block or restrict multiple accounts that post negative comments. Early feedback has been encouraging, and we’ve found that it helps people, especially with larger followings, maintain a positive environment on […]

LinkedIn’s Merging its Live-Streaming and Events Tools for Virtual Events

LinkedIn’s Merging its Live-Streaming and Events Tools for Virtual Events

With the COVID-19 lockdowns forcing more events to be canceled, many event organizers are opting for digital functions instead, where you can replicate much of the same information sharing – though, of course, without the benefit of in-person connection. Catering to this, LinkedIn made its Events option available for all company pages early last month. And now, LinkedIn’s looking to add more capacity for hosting professional events, by adding LinkedIn Live into the events stream, which will enable the full broadcast of your virtual functions direct on the platform. As explained by LinkedIn: “We’ve accelerated our product roadmap to bring you a tighter integration between LinkedIn Events and LinkedIn Live, turning […]
