Facebook Publishes Study on the Mental Health Impact of Social Comparison via @MattGSouthern

Facebook commissioned a study of the psychological impact of social comparison, which can be triggered by what people see on social media. Social media use continues to rise while much of the population remains under stay at home orders. With that being the case, it’s important to understand the effects that social media can have on our mental health. Facebook researchers Moira Burke, Justin Cheng, and Bethany de Gant examined whether social media is making social comparison worse. The findings of their study, which involved 37,000 people from 18 countries, were just published in a detailed report. Facebook’s researchers believe this may be the “largest survey on social comparison ever […]

LinkedIn Engagement Up 76% for ‘Work From Home’ Content via @MattGSouthern

LinkedIn published a report about how content engagement trends have shifted since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Companies have been forced to adapt their content plans to focus on the rapidly changing priorities of their audiences. Unsurprisingly, the number of posts mentioning COVID-19 are up – about 1 in 4 company posts mention coronavirus. That trend started in early March, but engagement for COVID-19-related posts didn’t really take off until the month of April. The percentage of LinkedIn posts mentioning working from home is up as well, with almost 15% of company posts touching on it in mid-to-late March. Engagement for ‘work from home’ posts has been on an even greater […]

Facebook Messenger Rooms: Drop-in Video Chats With up to 50 People via @MattGSouthern

Facebook continues to advance its video chat capabilities by introducing a Houseparty-like feature called Messenger Rooms. What makes Room unique, compared to regular Messenger video chats, is their spontaneous nature. “Spending time with each other should be spontaneous, not strained,” Facebook says in an announcement. Rooms can be created without users having to call each other directly. That’s what makes them more casual compared to standard video calls. Users can create a room and share a link to it with whoever they wish. Other users can choose to join the room at any point in time. People can join when the room opens, or drop in while the chat is […]

Instagram Playbook: Using Stories in the Age of COVID-19 via @MattGSouthern

A playbook published by Facebook details the most effective ways to use stories amid the coronavirus outbreak. The 8-page document aims to provide clarity at a time when businesses are uncertain how to best reach and serve their customers. Businesses have taken to using stories as a way to connect with people and add value to their day. “For example, fitness studios have posted workout challenges to keep their customers active and engaged, and food delivery services have used Stories to encourage people to support local restaurants by ordering takeout and delivery.” The real-time and authentic nature of stories make them an ideal way to communicate given how things are […]

Google Now Admits When its Search Results Are Sub-Standard via @MattGSouthern

In an unusual update to search, Google is letting users know when the results they’re seeing are lower-than-average quality. When Google is not quite able to match a user’s query with relevant results, it will display the following message: “It looks like there aren’t any great matches for your search.” Google does its best to provide the most relevant search results for a given query, but sometimes that’s not always possible. There are failsafes in place to prevent this from happening, Google notes. Misspellings could potentially lead to low quality results, which Google tries to circumvent by detecting typos and predicting the proper spelling. Google also makes continuous improvements to […]

Google Search Adds Feature For Keeping Track of Movies & Shows to Watch via @MattGSouthern

Google is launching a watchlist in search results to help people track the movies and shows they want to see. This feature is an extension of the TV and movie recommendations system Google added to search results last year. “When you’re deciding on a TV show or movie to watch, there are a lot of options out there. And figuring out what content is available across all your subscriptions can be time consuming and overwhelming. You can already find TV and movie recommendations in Search and today we’re adding a new Watchlist tab on mobile, so that you can keep track of what to watch next.” Add Recommendations to the […]

Facebook & Instagram to Show Where Popular Pages Are Posting From via @MattGSouthern

Facebook is piloting a new feature which will reveal the location of popular pages when they publish posts. With this change, users will be able to see the country where page managers are posting content from. This will make it easier to tell if they’re actually located where they say they are. Facebook says it’s testing this update as part of an effort to make high-reach pages more transparent. “We want to make sure people use our services authentically and can understand who is behind the posts they’re seeing… so we’re taking extra steps to make Pages and accounts with large audiences more transparent.” When this update rolls out, the […]

Google on How Long it Takes to Rank a New URL After 301 Redirect via @MattGSouthern

Google’s John Mueller was recently featured in a video about 301 redirects in which an interesting revelation was made. As part of the Ask Google Webmasters video series, Mueller answered the following question sent in by a site owner: “After a 301 redirect, how long does it take Google to start ranking the NEW URL instead of the old one? I did a redirect from A to B with 301, then Google indexed BOTH but instead of ranking the new one, Google is still ranking the old URL.” The most interesting thing we learned from the video is not the answer itself, but the revelation that Google does not help […]
