Google Discourages Repetitive Use of FAQ Structured Data Markup via @MattGSouthern

Google updated its guidelines for the use of FAQ structured data with recommendations regarding repetitive content. The following line has been added to Google’s developer document for FAQ structured data: “If you have FAQ content that is repetitive on your site (meaning, the same question and answer appear on multiple pages on your site), mark up only one instance of that FAQ for your entire site.” This change was spotted by Kenichi Suzuki who shared the information on Twitter. Presumably, Google added the new line about marking up repetitive content to prevent sites from hogging up too many spots in the SERPs. Suzuki shared examples of suspicious use of FAQ […]

TikTok Begins Letting Some Users Add Website Links in Profiles via @MattGSouthern

ADVERTISEMENT TikTok appears to be testing the ability for users to include direct website links in their profiles. This was spotted by a user who shared the following screenshot on Twitter: He also shared a screenshot from the ‘Edit profile’ screen, which appears to let users add any URL they wish. Adding website URLs to profiles is a relatively standard feature across social media, but it has been strangely absent from TikTok up to this point. Not all TikTok users have the ability to add URLs in their profiles at the time of this writing, though it’s likely it will be rolling out to more people eventually. That’s good news, […]

Google Appoints First-Ever ‘Creator Liaison’ for YouTube via @MattGSouthern

ADVERTISEMENT Google has created a new position within its company; a ‘creator liaison’ for communication between YouTube and its video publishers. A former YouTuber named Matt Koval has been appointed to the position, so you can now think of him as the Danny Sullivan (Google’s Search Liaison) of YouTube. Just as Sullivan acts as an advocate for SEOs and site owners, Koval will act as an advocate for YouTubers. That means he will communicate with creators directly via social media and work to resolve the issues and concerns they bring forward. Sullivan welcomed Koval to the team in a tweet earlier this week: Hello to @YouTubeLiaison — where @MattKoval is […]

Google Lets People Customize Their Profile Cards For Search Results via @MattGSouthern

Google is testing the ability for people to customize their own Knowledge Graph cards that are displayed in search results. Three official support pages have been published by Google (which have since been taken down) with details on how customizing profile cards works. Here’s some information I pulled from Google’s support pages before they were taken down: “You can create your presence on Google Search by filling out a public profile card. You need to submit a profile card with your relevant info. People will then be able to search for you and discover your profile on Google Search results.” Currently, this feature is only available in India, but that’s […]

HowTo markup is a special type of structured data that site owners can use for articles that contain step-by-step instructions. Properly marked up how-to pages are eligible to appear as a rich result in Google Search. Adding HowTo markup also generates a how-to action for Google Home and smart displays automatically. Previously, Google’s Rich Results Test only allowed site owners to test how their HowTo structured data would appear in search results. Now, site owners can also see how Google Home and smart displays pick up their HowTo markup. This […]
