Search Results Analysis: The Latent Question via @martinibuster

Google is increasingly ranking content based on relevance signals derived from algorithms designed to help them better understand search queries and webpages. We are in a post-keyword ranking era. Researching keywords still matter. But the way Google ranks websites, it’s largely not about matching words in a search query to words on a webpage. This article outlines a way to analyze the search results to understand why Google might be ranking a webpage and how to apply those lessons to content writing. Write About Topics? A common idea in SEO is to set aside writing about keywords and begin writing about topics. That approach makes sense. Until you stop and […]

ADVERTISEMENT The Digital Analytics Association announced that they have absorbed the Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization (SEMPO), an important milestone in the history of search marketing. Digital Analytics Association The DAA is an organization founded by executives related to the web analytics industry. It’s not an organization I am familiar with. Though the DAA has existed since the early 2000’s this is the first I’ve heard of them. But search marketers may be forgiven for not having heard of them either because it’s not really a search marketing organization, it’s a web analytics organization. This is how the DAA describes their mission: “Advancing the use of data to understand and […]

Google Discusses Link Reconsideration Requests via @martinibuster

In a Webmaster Hangout, someone asked John Mueller about examples of bad links that Google sent his client. The problem was that the sample links were nofollow. Google’s John Mueller explained why those sample links were nofollow then offered guidance on what should be done for a successful link reconsideration request. The question asked was long, so I’m not going to reproduce all of it. This is  the main part of the question: “Google has sent us two sample links… as an example of unnatural links. I found that one of the links carries nofollow tag… I don’t see how you can… send nofollow tag in a sample URL.” Google’s […]

WordPress publishers will no longer need to use JavaScript or third party plugins for lazy-loading their images. Lazy-loading The lazy-loading HTML attribute tells a browser to either wait before downloading an image or to download it right away. There is no JavaScript need to accomplish this. There are three kinds of lazy-loading attributes but only two that really matter: Lazy Eager Lazy, which will be enabled in WordPress 5.4 by default, means to wait until the users browser viewport is within a certain distance before downloading […]

Elementor Page Builder Plugin Vulnerability via @martinibuster

ADVERTISEMENT Popular WordPress page builder, Elementor has a vulnerability called an Authenticated Reflected XSS. This kind of vulnerability allows a hacker to run a script from another site and do things such as steal login credentials. The vulnerability involves causing a script to be loaded to the vulnerable site (for example through a search box), creating a URL that when followed will execute the script (that is hosted on another site). The hacker then sends a link to someone whose credentials could be stolen by the hacker. It’s left unsaid if a hacker can use this exploit to steal an Elementor publisher’s admin credentials. According to the WordPress Vulnerability Database, […]

How to Build Traffic to New or Struggling Websites via @martinibuster

Many sites struggle to build traffic. Sometimes it’s because of a Google update. For others it’s because the website is brand new. Sites don’t have to struggle. There is a way to build new sources of traffic. About Google’s Freshness Algorithm There’s an idea that Google prefers “fresh” content. That’s not entirely correct. The idea comes from a misunderstanding of Google’s “freshness algorithm.” The freshness algorithm promotes new content when it is trending and of the moment. The freshness algorithm is not about promoting recently published content. It’s about promoting trending content. The publication date is not a ranking factor. Changing the publication date will not make the web page […]
