DuckDuckGo: Google’s mobile share would drop 20% with new search choice screen

DuckDuckGo: Google’s mobile share would drop 20% with new search choice screen

Responding to a European antitrust decision against app bundling and pre-installation, Google announced a system last year to present search alternatives to Android users upon device set-up. The resulting “Android choice screen” presents three alternatives (and Google), using an auction to determine the specific competitors. DuckDuckGo and Info.com bid successfully and are available on the choice screen in all European markets; otherwise there is some variation by country. Google critics decried the auction mechanism as “pay to play” and some Google rivals declined to participate in the auction accordingly. New choice screen would boost competition. DuckDuckGo has now produced user research that argues Google would see its mobile market share, […]

How to Adapt Your Content Into an Instagram Story, According to HubSpot Marketers

How to Adapt Your Content Into an Instagram Story, According to HubSpot Marketers

If you’re a marketer, at some point, it’s likely you’re going to be asked the question, “Is it on brand?” This is especially true for social media content. Companies with social media pages generally have a theme that relates to the organization. The use of colors, sensory details, and styling all contribute to the overall theme of a page. When the colors, text, and photos all fit, I find myself going through all the content because it’s so easy to look at — the same is true for Stories. Sometimes, I come across posts that make me think, “How […]

Google adds ‘last updated’ hours notification to GMB profiles

Google adds ‘last updated’ hours notification to GMB profiles

Google My Business (GMB) profiles now indicate when business hours were last updated. A small but important change, this happened roughly two weeks ago. Not a test. Some SEOs interpreted this as a test when it first appeared, but I confirmed with Google today that it’s not. In the examples below — both are London retail store locations — the hours information includes the notification: “updated by business” and how recently. Profiles showing how recently business hours updated It appears to be a global change. However, I’ve had trouble finding U.S. examples. Yelp did this in June. Yelp introduced a similar “last updated” feature along with other COVID-19 notifications and […]

How Broadcast Journalism Helped Me Pivot to Social Media Management

How Broadcast Journalism Helped Me Pivot to Social Media Management

Pivoting from a career in broadcast journalism was a big decision for me. I loved everything about a newsroom environment: the breaking news, researching topics, identifying sources for stories, and feeling like I had a pulse on trends and issues taking place in the world. I was successful at it, too. In fact, I worked at some of the biggest news corporations in the world, including CNN, ABC News, CBSLA and others. However, at some point — because I was spending so much time on social media listening for breaking news and looking for story ideas — my interest in social media evolved. I knew I wanted to make a […]
