Instagram’s Adding a New Way to Find and Share Stories that Mention Your Profile

This could be an interesting one for brand accounts on Instagram. Looking to further tap into the rising popularity of Stories, Instagram has added a new Stories @ mention option, which highlights any Stories that mention your profile, and enables you to easily re-share them into your own Stories stream. As you can see in this example (posted by social media expert Matt Navarra), the new option appears as an @ symbol in your Create mode options. When you slide over to this option, you’ll note that it also says ‘See all 3’ at the top of the screen, signifying how many Stories @mentions your profile has at any given […]

Results ranked according to price and convenience. The State of Mobile in 2020 [Infographic]

Mobile connectivity has changed the way we interact, the way we shop, the way we find information – basically, almost everything we do is now connected, in some way, back to our mobile digital devices. It’s amazing to consider just how significant the influence of mobile has become – for example, if you were heading out to the supermarket, you might check your phone for the nearest location, or to see if your local store has what you need in stock. On the way there, you might use a GPS app via your phone in the car, or listen to music streamed from your device. Once shopping, you could call […]

Google: Web Pages in Featured Snippets Not Repeated in Organic Listings via @MattGSouthern

Google’s Danny Sullivan confirms web pages in a featured snippet position will no longer be repeated in regular page one organic listings. This is a brand new change rolling out as of today. The change will affect 100% of all search listings worldwide. If a web page listing is elevated into the featured snippet position, we no longer repeat the listing in the search results. This declutters the results & helps users locate relevant information more easily. Featured snippets count as one of the ten web page listings we show. — Danny Sullivan (@dannysullivan) January 22, 2020 Today, 100% globally. — Danny Sullivan (@dannysullivan) January 22, 2020 Previously, it was […]

Google’s John Mueller: One Violation Will Not Result in a Manual Action via @MattGSouthern

Google’s John Mueller clarifies that one violation of the webmaster guidelines will not get a site banned from search results. This was stated by Mueller in a Reddit thread where an SEO was concerned about a competitor allegedly manipulating search rankings with invisible, keyword stuffed text. The SEO wants to know why they’re being outranked by their “cheating” competitor. In response, Mueller says the hidden text alone would not be enough for one site to outrank another. To that end, it’s not enough to get a site banned either. “A site is not going to outrank your site just because of hidden text. We use many, many signals for ranking. […]

Google’s John Mueller Recommends Less Than 5 Hops Per Redirect Chain via @MattGSouthern

Google’s John Mueller advises site owners to aim for less than 5 hops in a 301 redirect chain for URLs that are frequently crawled. This is not only advisable in order to maintain optimal page speed, Mueller says Google will only follow 5 hops in a redirect chain per crawl attempt. If there’s more than 5 hops in a chain then Google will not land on the destination URL. Mueller provided this advice in a Reddit thread where an SEO was asking if it was acceptable to use more than one 301 when redirecting from one blog post to another. In response, Mueller says it doesn’t matter as long as […]
