80% of Major US E-commerce Stores Use JavaScript for Crucial Content via @MattGSouthern

ADVERTISEMENT According to new data, up to 80% of popular US-based e-commerce stores use JavaScript on crucial content such as product descriptions. That’s an alarming number considering any time JavaScript is used to generate important content it runs the risk of not being indexed in search results. Google is getting better at crawling and rendering JavaScript, but it’s not perfect. The company still recommends using static HTML as much as possible. The study, from software company Onely, found that 25% of web pages analyzed contained crucial JavaScript content that was unindexed by Google. For some sites, over half of their indexed pages have unindexed JavaScript content. For example, it was […]

Google: Doesn’t Matter if You Use Absolute or Relative URLs for Internal Links via @MattGSouthern

Google’s John Mueller recently stated that, for the most part, it doesn’t matter whether you use absolute or relative URLs when linking to pages internally. This topic was brought up in a recent Google Webmaster Central hangout where the following question was asked: “In your opinion, which ultimately is best to use when doing internal linking – absolute or relative URLs?” In response, Mueller presents two different scenarios where absolute and relative URLs may or may not matter. Scenario 1: Perfect Site Structure In a theoretical case where a site has a perfect structure – meaning it has correctly implemented canonicals and a single uniform domain – then it doesn’t […]

For example, businesses can quickly get themselves on the web all on their own by utilizing tools such as Google My Business. However, a GMB page on its own is no substitute for a custom website. With that said, let’s look at Google’s recommendations for hiring a developer to create that website. Google’s Recommendations for Hiring […]

ADVERTISEMENT YouTube is rolling out policy changes in January which have video creators concerned their revenue may be adversely affected. The upcoming changes will address concerns raised by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regarding YouTube’s compliance under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). There are several changes on the way, but the change that specifically relates to revenue has to do with how ads will be served. Here’s what’s changing In accordance with COPPA, YouTube will stop serving personalized ads on content that is made for kids. That’s because serving personalized ads to children is not permissible under COPPA. The company advises creators that their revenue may go […]

The app is even better! — jack 🌍🌏🌎 (@jack) November 27, 2019 Currently, DuckDuckGo handles an average of 48 million searches per day, and recently hit a daily record of over 51 million searches. Of course, that’s considerably less than what Google handles, which makes it notable that it’s the preferred search engine […]

Google Offers 2 Tips for Improving Web Content via @martinibuster

Google’s John Mueller was asked in a Webmaster Hangout about improving web page content focus. Mueller shared two tips on how to do that. How to Improve Content Focus? The question was asked about poorly indexed Product Description Pages (PDP). The publisher asked if making the content more prominent would help. “Do you think moving the images down and the relevant text up would help Google better interpret the focus of each of these pages?” Somewhat surprisingly, John Mueller answered no, that’s not how to improve content focus. Then he explained why: “So just shifting the location of content within an HTML page I don’t think that plays a big […]
