And the beverage sector is no exception. Given the popularity of recipes, and related food discovery trends, it makes sense that drink marketers should also be paying attention – but what role, exactly, does social now play in beverage discovery, and how can marketers use that to advantage? A Major Hollywood Studio Turns to SEO to Boost Ticket Sales via @MattGSouthern

In a rare move, a Hollywood studio changes a movie title after its release date to make it more search-friendly. This past weekend, Warner Bros. released Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). The title has since been shortened, but the length was not even the main issue. The real problem? Warner Bros’ money-making character – Harley Quinn of DC Comics fame – isn’t mentioned until the end of the extraordinarily long title. As SEOs know, high-value keywords should appear toward the beginning of the title. Warner Bros. must have gotten the message, as the movie title has been changed to Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey. […]

Domains Ending in .Com to Reportedly Get More Expensive via @MattGSouthern

ADVERTISEMENT As per a new agreement between ICANN and Verisign, the price of domains ending in .com may go up in the coming years. Domain registrar Namecheap reports that the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has allowed Verisign to increase the wholesale price of .com domains. The new contract allows Verisign to charge domain registrars 7% more for .com domains per year for the next 4 years (2020-2023). Prices will then be frozen for 2 years, followed by more increases between 2026 and 2029. In theory, within 10 years time, the price of .com domains could cost roughly 70% more than their current selling price. A press […]

Google’s John Mueller: There is No Benchmark for Crawl Budget via @MattGSouthern

There is no benchmark for what is considered an optimal crawl budget for websites, Google’s John Mueller says. This was stated in response to a Reddit thread where an SEO asked whether there’s ideal percentage of pages that Googlebot should be crawling every day. The thought behind this question is content may be kept fresh if Googlebot crawls it more regularly. Here is the question in full: “While everyone talks about crawl budget, I haven’t found a specific cutoff or a range for this. Like what should be the minimum percentage of pages out of total (or total changes made everyday) should be crawled by GoogleBot everyday to keep the […]

Analyzing search results reveals a lot about Google’s view of useful content

Creating content is a process that has to get smarter all the time. Google is continually improving how it understands naturally expressed human language, as perfectly evidenced in its BERT update from last October. Google has said – and webmaster trends analyst John Mueller has echoed – that there is really nothing drastically new to optimize for after the update, aside from ensuring that SEOs are writing naturally in their content rather than focusing too much on keywords. The idea of creating content around topics rather than keywords is not particularly new, and so I am presenting an argument for making sure your content is addressing exactly what users want […]

Warner Bros. renamed the Harley Quinn movie for better SEO

Warner Bros. has renamed the recently released film Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) to simply Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey. The reason? To make it easier for moviegoers to find tickets online, the company told The Verge Tuesday. The new title frontloads “Harley Quinn”, the main character’s name, instead of burying it at the end.
