Video: Detlef Johnson on SEO for developers

At SMX East, I sat down with Detlef Johnson, one of the earliest pioneers in SEO, to discuss his new efforts with Search Marketing Expo and Search Engine Land. But I had to first ask him about the past, since he was one the pioneers in the SEO industry, even before it was named SEO. Detlef ran a very popular newsletter discussion forum in the 1990s where a lot of SEOs got their information around how search engines worked. This was prior to Google even being founded. He also helped run Search Engine Strategies for several years, starting in 1999 in San Francisco, California. Detlef is now working on bringing […]

Google’s ‘Interesting finds’ SERP feature: The ‘interesting’ reason why mobile organic search traffic remained strong while desktop dropped

Google’s ‘Interesting finds’ SERP feature: The ‘interesting’ reason why mobile organic search traffic remained strong while desktop dropped

While helping a company that dropped during the January 2019 core update, I came across an interesting situation, pun intended. The site dropped by about 30% overall and I began digging into the drop to learn more about what was going on. One thing I noticed pretty quickly was that desktop traffic from Google organic dropped more than mobile, and sometimes much more than mobile for the queries I was checking. For example, I noticed clicks from Google for some queries dropped 30%+ on desktop, while clicks on mobile-only dropped by 5-10%. I saw this trend a number of times for this specific site. Well, it didn’t take long to […]

Limited No More: 10 Updates to the AMP Format Digital Marketers Have to See

When AMP launched years ago, it was intending to speed the mobile web by restricting the use of certain page elements. Today, though, between workarounds and new developments, it can support dynamic content and even entire websites. Still, the misconception remains that it’s only effective for static content. And this isn’t the only misconception. Today, we set the record straight about key components of the AMP format and how they’ve evolved. How the AMP format has changed 1. AMP contributors are growing in number and variety AMP started as a small, Google-backed project with only two contributors. By 2018, 700 people had contributed to the project. How To Promote Your Business

How To Promote Your Business

Okay, okay, I’ll admit it — to waste time, I start a Google search query and let the suggestions do the rest, hoping to fall into a rabbit hole of interesting facts. For instance, today’s lucky search query was “How many businesses”, and I ended up going with “…does Shaq own” (let’s just say, I was shocked to see the result.) Here’s what I figured out: Shaquille O’Neal is the joint owner of over 150 Five Guys restaurants, 17 Auntie Annie’s Pretzels restaurants, over 100 car washes, 40 fitness centers, a mall, a movie theater, and a few Vegas nightclubs. With over 30 million businesses just in the United States […]

Google Says Paid Links Don’t Work via @martinibuster

Google Says Paid Links Don’t Work via @martinibuster

John Mueller answered the question about the ability of paid links to help sites rank. He insisted that in “pretty much all of the cases” he’s reviewed it wasn’t the links. Do Paid Links Help Sites Rank? The person asking the question claimed 80-90% of sites ranking in their niche are using paid links. That’s a not necessarily unusual situation. Here is the question:  Are backlinks important in ranking factors? Because nowadays 80 to 90% of websites are buying backlinks which I think is very unethical. But these websites are also ranking on the first page. Why? John Mueller first confirms that Google still uses links. But then he says […]

Google bans face mask ads globally due to misleading coronavirus claims

Google bans face mask ads globally due to misleading coronavirus claims

Google is cracking down on advertising for face masks during the coronavirus epidemic. The company began banning ads for face masks on Monday. Applies to all face mask advertising. The ban applies to all advertisers, including those who may have had long-running campaigns promoting “dust masks,” for example. Advertisers will see a message in their accounts stating, “This candidate is not permitted to show ads in your target location,” as shown in the tweet above from Lane Rissardini of Dallas-based Marion Relationship Marketing. It falls under the “sensitive events” section of Google’s guidelines around suitable advertising content. It typically takes a few days for this type of change to fully […]
