SEO in 2020: What Role Do Keywords Play? via @Kammie_Jenkins

It’s 2020, and SEO professionals who’ve been at it for a while will know just how much has changed in the past decade. In 2010, we still hadn’t been hit with Panda or Hummingbird or RankBrain or BERT, and many of us still thought “SEO content” was a matter of: Adding our target keyword and its close variants in the content X times. Making sure to add that keyword to all the magic places like your title tag, meta description, H1, etc. Writing at least X words because that’s the magic length for rankings. But Google’s algorithm has matured. We know now (or we should) that getting our content ranked […]

Google desktop favicon search results study

Google desktop favicon search results study

In 2019, Google introduced a new format in mobile search results which included a small “favicon” icon from the website, to the left of the snippet. Yard carried out a user study on mobile results in September that concluded that some users think that favicon results are ads. When the desktop results launched we carried out a similar study to identify the effect of the changes. Methodology We asked a set of 250 users to look at 12 images of desktop search results and answer the question “Does this image contain any adverts?” with a “yes” […]

Dwell Time is the SEO Metric You Need to Track

Dwell Time is the SEO Metric You Need to Track

This morning, I made a quick Google search. When the results page loaded, I spent time clicking through the first page of websites to find what I was looking for. When I didn’t find my answer, I clicked back to that results page to look at the next one. This process took me through to the bottom of the page until I refined my search and started the process again. I didn’t know it at the time, but I was actually contributing to a powerful metric — dwell time. When we talk about metrics, we tend to focus on demographics. We ask questions like, Who’s looking at your site, where […]

Google: Structured Data Has No Impact on Ranking in Web Search via @MattGSouthern

Google’s Search Liaison, Danny Sullivan, clarifies that structured data is optional and does not impact search rankings. While this has always been the case, Sullivan reiterated his fact after some controversy was caused over a misunderstanding that structured data is required to rank well in Google Search. The Controversy This week, a food blogger tweeted that she received a notice from Google which stated structured data for calorie counts had to be added to recipes. Me: *Trying to create a food blog that doesn’t participate in […]

Facebook Backs Off on Plan to Bring Ads to WhatsApp

Facebook Backs Off on Plan to Bring Ads to WhatsApp

In a deviation from its normal monetization strategy, Facebook is reportedly reversing course on its plans to insert ads into messaging platform WhatsApp. According to The Wall Street Journal, Facebook is re-thinking it’s approach to WhatsApp as a revenue-generating tool: “WhatsApp in recent months disbanded a team that had been established to find the best ways to integrate ads into the service, according to people familiar with the matter. The team’s work was then deleted from WhatsApp’s code, the people said.” That would mean that while WhatsApp has more than 1.5 billion users, it won’t be contributing significantly to Facebook’s overall revenues anytime soon. Facebook purchased WhatsApp for $19 billion […]

Facebook-Owned Oculus Reduces the Price of its Best-Selling, Standalone VR Headset

Last month, in my 2020 predictions post, I noted that: “While virtual reality may not reach that key plateau of consumer awareness in the next year, you can expect it to become a more significant consideration – and eventually, a more important marketing tool as more consumers start to buy into the next phase.” Facebook has been investing big into virtual reality through its dedicated VR arm Oculus for some years now, and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has repeatedly stated that he believes this is the next evoution for social connection. But in order to facilitate this, Facebook needs to make VR viable – it needs to be not only […]
