Facebook Expands Brand Collabs Manager to Include Instagram Creators

With influencer marketing set to remain a significant consideration in 2020, particularly on Instagram, Facebook is now looking to provide an easier, more direct way for brands and Instagram creators to collaborate on campaigns and partnerships. Last year, Facebook launched its Brand Collabs Manager tool, which is essentially a search engine for Facebook creators, in order to help brands find relevant, on-platform influencers to connect with. Now, Facebook is opening up Brand Collabs Manager to Instagram creators as well, which will make it a more comprehensive creator marketplace tool, and could, potentially, establish the building blocks for the definitive Instagram influencer database. As explained by Facebook: “…we’re opening up Facebook’s […]

Google Says Some Search Console Data For December Might Be Inaccurate via @MattGSouthern

Google quietly announced that a bug was discovered in Search Console which may impact reporting for a period of time in December. Specifically, the bug affects reporting of Google Discover impressions and clicks between December 8 and December 13. As a result, site owners may see a data drop in the Performance report during that time period. This is important to take note of, especially for those who prepare monthly reports for clients. Google confirmed the issue has been fixed and that it only impacted data reporting. The bug did not affect a site’s content being surfaced in Google Discover. Data reported after December 13 will be accurate, although data […]

Instagram Has New Rules for Publishing Branded Content via @MattGSouthern

ADVERTISEMENT Instagram is introducing a new policy that will prohibit influencers from publishing certain types of content. Under this new policy, branded content that promotes goods such as vaping, tobacco products, and weapons will not be allowed. Instagram’s existing advertising policies have long prohibited that type of content, but the policies were not strictly enforced. That will change in the coming weeks, which is when the company says it will ramp up enforcement. Policy changes are also coming that will affect branded content promoting alcohol and diet supplements. No exact details have been provided regarding the changes, Instagram just says there will be “special restrictions.” Instagram is in the process […]

Google Search Console Can More Accurately Report on Indexed Pages via @MattGSouthern

Google Search Console has been updated with the ability to report more accurately on indexed pages in the Index Coverage report. This update actually occurred on December 15, but Google just announced the change today via Twitter. From Dec 15, the Index Coverage report can more accurately report on indexed pages. Because of this, some pages that were “Crawled – currently not indexed” are now known to be indexed. You’ll see a chart notification in this report. pic.twitter.com/RLgmo6x8jX — Google Webmasters (@googlewmc) December 18, 2019 There’s also an annotation on the Index Coverage report itself stating that “an event has occurred” on December 15 that may affect data in the […]

Bing partners with flight booking sites to bolster flight search offerings

Bing partners with flight booking sites to bolster flight search offerings

Bing has partnered with airlines to provide a more comprehensive flight search experience, the company announced on Tuesday. It makes use of real-time data and direct integrations with airlines to facilitate flight search, comparison and booking. Why we care Bing’s flight search will look familiar to those familiar with Google’s flight search offering. The flight search interface on Bing is very prominent on the page, which may have some booking sites concerned. It may hurt traffic to online travel agencies (OTAs) sites such as Expedia and TripAdvisor as the flight search interface pushes those listings down the page. More on the news To browse flights, users can conduct a search […]

SMX Overtime: Opportunities and challenges for conversational voice search

At the SMX East conference I spoke on the topic of voice, and in particular, I discussed how to go about building a personal assistant app. During the Q&A for that session there were a few questions that went unanswered, and in today’s post I will address five of them. To compete with others on Google search, do we need to build an app for voice search? While I’m a fan of […]

Marketers moving away from home-grown tools, hiring fresh teams for new martech

As the marketing technology landscape and capabilities continue to evolve, organizations are on an ongoing quest to update and improve their technology stacks. In fact, the vast majority (83%) upgraded at least one martech application in the past year, according to our Martech Replacement Survey 2020 published Monday. To better understand the frequency and motivations behind organizational martech updates, we surveyed 398 digital marketers in October. Several interesting trends emerged. Organizations are moving away from in-house solutions. In a striking find, many companies are migrating away from marketing technologies developed in-house. Respondents were nearly as likely to have upgraded or replaced a homegrown technology (49%) as a commercially available solution […]

The big list of 2019 Google search algorithm updates

Google’s pace of tweaking and updating Search has accelerated dramatically — it made 3,200 changes to Search in 2018 alone, up from about 400 changes back in 2010. Just a sliver of these changes receive public confirmation or even draw substantial attention, but those that do can (sometimes) provide insights into the kinds of content that Google prioritizes and ranks well. 2019 saw a number of publically disclosed core and other search algorithm updates. Among the many changes of 2019, Google established a naming convention for core updates and brought natural language understanding to search results. Core updates of 2019 Core search updates happen a few times a year and […]
