Instagram Adds New Boomerang Modes and Capability to Trim Boomerang Loops

Instagram has added some new options to its Boomerang camera mode for Stories, including ‘SloMo’, ‘Echo’ and ‘Duo’ variants. The new options add more ways in which you can use the Boomerang mode to liven up your Instagram Stories. In addition to this, Instagram has also added capacity to ‘trim and tweak’ your Boomerang loop (visible in the second screenshot in the example above) in order to better control your final clip. The new Boomerang modes and the trimming option were first spotted in testing by reverse engineering expert Jane Manchun Wong back in August and November respectively. Wong’s initial discovery of the new Boomerang modes identified six specific options […]

Facebook’s Updated Desktop Layout is Now Appearing for More Users

In what feels a little like deja-vu, Facebook has this week confirmed that more users will now start seeing its new-look desktop layout, which includes tabs along the top of the screen, and a more compressed view. We actually reported back in September that more people were getting access to this new desktop presentation style, which Facebook first announced in May last year. It seems odd that it’s taking such a long time to make its way through the implementation pipeline, but Facebook is taking a slow and cautious approach, which includes asking those who have been granted access to the new format for their feedback on possible improvements as […]

Reddit Bans Deceptive Misrepresentation, Including Deepfakes, on its Platform

In yet another indicator of the potential rise of deepfakes as a weapon of misinformation, Reddit has this week updated its guidelines to outlaw the use of deceptive impersonation within its app, with specific mention of deepfake content. As per Reddit: “We’ve been doing significant work on site integrity operations as we move into 2020 to ensure that we have the appropriate rules and processes in place to handle bad actors who are trying to manipulate Reddit, particularly around issues of great public significance, like elections. To this end, we thought it was time to update our policy on impersonation to better cover some of the use cases that we […]

Yelp cracks down on ‘review rings’ as Google continues to see widespread mapspam

Locksmiths has always been a troubled category on Google. For years, honest local locksmiths have been crowded out by fake listings and fabricated reviews. Every so often an article calls that to our collective attention. Sprawling network of fake locations. Most recently, the CBC investigated the category and found “a sprawling network of fake locations and fake five-star reviews cluttering local Google Maps in the Greater Toronto Area.” Google has pledged to address the issue in response. In June 2019, a wide-ranging Wall Street Journal piece alleged that “millions of business listings on Google are fake” in an article that got considerable attention. In response, Google detailed how it fights […]

If you manage large or complex accounts or have extensive campaign naming taxonomies, Google Ads custom dimensions might help simplify your reporting efforts and campaign naming systems. SMX Overtime: Managing Google My Business profiles, reviews and more

As an SMX East speaker for the “Google My Business From A to Z” session in New York, I wanted to answer a few questions from attendees after the event. Here are a few of my thoughts about optimizing profiles on GMB, handling reviews and managing location issues. Do you have any recommendations for ensuring accurate pin locations? Google will often randomly change these and also accept edits from crowdsourced information that is not accurate, without any sort of push notification to the location owner that something has changed. This can definitely be frustrating. Other than just checking manually and dragging the pin back and forth, I highly recommend checking […]

Zuckerberg Outlines Five Key Areas of Focus for Facebook Moving Forward

Every year, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg sets himself a challenge, a New Year’s resolution of sorts that he plans to commit himself to, in addition to running the company. In 2009 it was to ‘wear a tie to work every day’, in 2015 it was ‘read a book every week’, in 2010 it was ‘learn Mandarin’. But this year, after a couple of tumultuous years for The Social Network, Zuckerberg is changing tack. Instead of setting himself a personal challenge, Zuckerberg says that he’s taking “a longer-term focus. “Rather than having year-to-year challenges, I’ve tried to think about what I hope the world and my life will look in 2030 […]
