When silence is not an option: Brands dive in with protest support

When silence is not an option: Brands dive in with protest support

George Floyd was killed by police on May 25. Since that time, Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests have swept much of the country and grown into an international movement against racism and police violence. Most brands have historically avoided taking political stands for fear of offending some of their customers. While that has slowly changed over time — as Millennials increasingly expect them to take stands on social and political issues — the conventional wisdom has largely remained: stay out of it. Brands shunned Kaepernick. That was true of former NFL player Colin Kaepernick’s peaceful “take a knee” protests against police brutality roughly four years ago. He was shunned by the […]

Google webspam report: Cracking down on renegade linking practices, auto-generated content

Google discovers more than 25 billion spammy pages a day, according to its annual webspam report released Tuesday. The company also published a companion post on why it’s important to keep spam out of search results. The definition of spam. “We define ‘spam’ as using techniques that attempt to mimic [high quality content] signals without actually delivering on the promise of high quality content, or other tactics that might prove harmful to searchers,” the post reads. A more comprehensive list of spammy behaviors can be found on Google’s Webmaster Guidelines. How Google stops spam. In the majority of cases, Google automatically identifies spammy behavior and ensures that those pages don’t […]

4 things we learned about automated bidding during the pandemic

4 things we learned about automated bidding during the pandemic

Bid management is understandably a favorite topic for PPC marketers because the right bids make the difference between campaigns that lose money and ones that make money. In the old days, search marketers spent a lot of time setting the right CPC bids. But nowadays, in a world where more of the day-to-day of PPC management can be automated, that task has shifted to picking the right automation and feeding it the right settings like targets for CPA and ROAS. Since the right bids are so critical to success, you’d think it’d be one of the best-understood parts of PPC management but in reality, how automations like Smart Bidding from […]

Video: Katherine Watier Ong on how to grow your SEO team

After I sat down with Sarah Teach to talk about conscious capitalism in SEO, I then spoke with Katherine Watier Ong. Katherine’s internet career goes back to 1994 and has been doing the SEO thing for over 15 years now. In some of her early days, she had to build an SEO team out of nothing. We spoke about how she was able to build out SEO teams through a careful vetting process and then continued training. She would often send these candidates home with open book tests, testing their capabilities in using Google to find answers. Writing skills were very important to her and then a clear understanding of […]

‘What’s an ads guy doing running Google search?’

‘What’s an ads guy doing running Google search?’

Prabhakar Raghavan, Google’s new head of Search and Assistant. A number of SEOs on Twitter reacted to yesterday’s news that Prabhakar Raghavan was taking over Search and Assistant from Ben Gomes with uncertainty or confusion. This may reflect respect for Gomes and unfamiliarity with Raghavan’s background. Gomes’ move is voluntary, and the company says he will remain involved as a technical advisor to search in addition to his new role leading Google Education initiatives. Unfamiliar with Raghavan’s history. Many people probably saw short pieces like this announcing the fact of the changes without going into much depth about Raghavan’s long history and deep knowledge of search. He’s described simply as […]
