TechTarget cites technical SEO issues as reason for 25% decline in Google traffic

TechTarget, a business-to-business marketing company, said it saw a 25% drop in Google organic traffic in November. Though the company said that organic Google traffic trends do not directly correlate to company revenue, the drop was significant enough that TechTarget noted it in its fourth-quarter 2019 earnings report [PDF], released Wednesday. November traffic change. “Unpaid traffic represented 94% of overall traffic in the quarter,” the company wrote in the earnings release. “This is the most important traffic metric because it is one of the main reasons that we operate at 76% gross margin and have so much operating leverage in our model, unlike many internet businesses whose traffic acquisition costs […]

New chart annotations make Google Ads’ change history reports much easier to navigate

Google added annotation cards in change history reports in the Google Ads UI on Wednesday. There are also new sections for Using annotations. You’ll see a little triangle icon below the change history performance chart indicating an annotation. Click on the triangle to open a card that lists and links to the types of changes made during that time period. Google: Use (relevant) keywords in your Google My Business description

A new “Describe your business(es)” section in the “Improve your local ranking on Google” page of the Google My Business (GMB) Help site encourages local business owners to include relevant keywords in their GMB descriptions. Think about how users search. The new section, first spotted by Stefan Somborac, founder of Marketing Metrology, advises businesses to include keywords customers would use to find their business within their listings. “Think about the words customers would type to find your business, and make sure that your listing actually includes those keywords within it,” the section reads. “For example, if someone who lives in Dublin, California is looking for a NY Pizza restaurant and […]

7 mistakes to avoid when optimizing your Instagram account for SEO

7 mistakes to avoid when optimizing your Instagram account for SEO

Obviously, you work hard to make your website climb to the top of the search engine rankings. But not many entrepreneurs and marketers know that optimization techniques are useful beyond Google, Bing and other search engines. SEO is also applicable to social media platforms, where it can aid in promoting an account, gaining new followers, boosting engagement rate, and enhancing sales. Instagram ranks well-optimized pages higher and this attracts more active followers, drives engagement and improves page trust score. In turn, all this leads to an even higher ranking. Though […]

Analyzing search results reveals a lot about Google’s view of useful content

Creating content is a process that has to get smarter all the time. Google is continually improving how it understands naturally expressed human language, as perfectly evidenced in its BERT update from last October. Google has said – and webmaster trends analyst John Mueller has echoed – that there is really nothing drastically new to optimize for after the update, aside from ensuring that SEOs are writing naturally in their content rather than focusing too much on keywords. The idea of creating content around topics rather than keywords is not particularly new, and so I am presenting an argument for making sure your content is addressing exactly what users want […]
