YouTube is replacing the ‘Trending’ tab in its app with a new ‘Explore’ listing, which will showcase more video categories, along with popular videos, in order to prompt broader discovery. As explained by YouTube: “We’ve been testing a new tab in the YouTube mobile app called Explore – with Explore, you not only have access to Trending videos, but also to destination pages for some popular content categories like Gaming, Music, Fashion & Beauty, Learning and more – all from one place.” YouTube has been testing out a range of variations of the Explore tab since 2018 in order to get more people tapping through to different topic segments and discover additional content. After adding new information prompts and links to official resources in related search queries last week, Instagram is now expanding on its COVID-19 response tools, with additional information panels in the main feed and a ban on searches for coronavirus related AR masks. As per Instagram: “To help people get relevant and up-to-date resources, we will start showing more information from WHO and local health ministries at the top of Instagram’s Feed in some countries.” This is a more extreme informational measure from Instagram. Despite various content moderation and data privacy concerns, TikTok continues to gain momentum, with the latest data from app analytics firm SensorTower showing that February 2020 was TikTok’s best performing month, in terms of total app downloads, to date. As per SensorTower: “TikTok was downloaded by close to 113 million App Store and Google Play users worldwide in February, making it the app’s best month ever for both installs and revenue according to Sensor Tower Store Intelligence estimates.” SensorTower further notes that TikTok was the most downloaded non-game app worldwide last month, outperforming both WhatsApp and Facebook. In another example of the shifting media landscape, the UK Government has this week announced a new initiative which will see it work with YouTubers and other social media influencers to help spread accurate information about the COVID-19 outbreak, and counter harmful misinformation being shared online. As reported by Business Insider: “The UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) will hand £500,000 ($US630,000) in funding to the H2H Network, which previously fought misinformation during the Ebola outbreak.
