With the 2020 March Madness tournament approaching, Snapchat has this week published a new set of stats on the related sports discussion on its platform as it looks to promote its capacity to help marketers connect with audiences during the event. And certainly, some of those stats are impressive – first off, Snap says that its platform is able to provide “incremental audience reach to TV campaigns in the US”. “Since 2017, Snapchat has commissioned over 20 Total Ad Ratings studies from Nielsen. These studies measure the audience reached by advertising on Snapchat and television respectively. When we commissioned a meta-analysis from Nielsen to understand average performance we observed the […]
With concerns about the spread of coronavirus rising, and related discussion now stretching across the world, both Twitter and Facebook have this week outlined the proactive measures they’re taking to ensure that their respective users are guided towards accurate sources of information, and that the conversation is not hijacked by those looking to spread fear. Twitter says that there have been more than 15 million tweets about the coronovirus outbreak already, and the discussion is gaining momentum fast. And while Twitter also notes that it hasn’t seen any “significant coordinated attempts to spread disinformation at scale about this issue”, it’s allocated resources “to ensure that trends, search, and other common areas of […]
While there are now more than 300,000 active chatbots live on Facebook Messenger, chatbots, as a functional option, have never really gained traction the way that Facebook might have hoped. Initially, after the launch of its Bot Platform, Facebook envisioned an all-encompassing future for Messenger bots, modeled on the success of similar tools in the Chinese market, though with expanded functionality. Indeed, former Messenger Boss David Marcus (who’s now in charge of its Libra cryptocurrency), remarked that Messenger bots would “transcend their Clippy origins and appeal to the masses”. But they haven’t, at least not yet. Part of the problem is that people don’t seem to have warmed to engaging with bots, […]
With the 2020 US Census getting underway this month, the Census Bureau has been working with social platforms to stop the spread of misleading information which could hinder its capacity to capture accurate information. As a result of these efforts, last month, Facebook announced a ban on misleading information about when and how to participate in the census, as well as “any false reports pertaining to the consequences of participating in the national survey”. And now, Pinterest is following suit, announcing a new amendment to its Community Guidelines in relation to civic participation, which will see it work to detect and remove census misinformation from its platform. As per Pinterest: “The […]
Earlier this month, an internal memo from Facebook’s former mobile ads chief Andrew Bosworth was leaked to The New York Times, in which Bosworth discussed the platform’s role in the 2016 US Presidential Election. In the memo, Bosworth largely dismissed the various controversies around Cambridge Analytica, fake news, Russian interference, etc. Instead, Bosworth attributed Donald Trump’s 2016 election victory to one thing: “So was Facebook responsible for Donald Trump getting elected? I think the answer is yes, but not for the reasons anyone thinks.[…] He got elected because he ran the single best digital ad campaign I’ve ever seen from any advertiser. Period.” High praise, from the key person who […]
Facebook has this week mapped the next stages for the implementation of its independent Content Oversight Board, which will help the platform make more informed decisions on what should, and should not be allowed to be shared across its network under its rules. The Content Oversight Board, which Facebook has been working on over the last year, will review cases where users disagree with initial content decisions made by Facebook – whether that’s resulted in content being removed or left up after their complaint. Some of these cases, according to Facebook, “go to the core of how we balance safety and free expression”, and as such, the Oversight Board will provide […]

Facebook has published its Q4 2019 performance update, showing increases in both users and revenue, though costs associated with newer initiatives are also impeding overall growth. First off, on users – Facebook added 34 million daily active users, taking it to 1.66 billion DAU for the period. Facebook added a million more users in the North American market, where it generates the majority of its revenue, while it saw the most significant growth, once again, in the Asia-Pacific market, adding 14 million more daily actives. Overall, Facebook’s daily user growth momentum remains steady, and in line with ongoing growth patterns, though it will need to increase revenue per user in […]
Pretty much every app now has one, and TikTok is also now jumping aboard the ‘dark mode’ train, with a new setting for low light situations now available to some users. As you can see in this tweet from social media expert Matt Navarra, the new dark mode option will either seek to match your device settings, when you have dark mode activated, or you’ll be able to manually switch to dark mode in your app settings. Dark mode options lessen the impacts of blue light exposure, which can, in some cases, cause your brain to stop producing melatonin, and disrupt your sleep cycle. That then leads to other health impacts – […]
For a growing number of brands, social platforms have become key customer service channels, enabling consumers to get in touch, quickly and easily, on the platforms that they’re already using, while also providing businesses with an opportunity to address and resolve concerns, and provide further assistance as needed. And as more businesses jump on the social customer care train, that then raises the bar of expectation for others. These days, consumers expect to be able to shoot businesses a quick message, or tweet a brand handle and get a reply. That increased expectation is underlined in a new survey from Boston Digital, which incorporates responses from 554 people in regards […]
