Facebook has launched a new groups option called ‘work groups’, which, Facebook says, will help people “connect with their coworkers more easily”. The option seeks to reduce the need to connect with every person you work with, and let them into your more personal interactions. By creating a specific group only for work colleagues, you can keep the two elements separate, with only your work-related information showing up in your work group profile. After it was spotted by several users over the last few weeks, Pinterest has now officially confirmed the roll out of its updated Pin format, which includes some minor functional tweaks, and separates each Pin element for more specific focus. As explained by Pinterest: “Our updated look for iOS and Android makes Pinterest even more visual, with personalized recommendations front and center in your home feed and reduced space around Pins to celebrate the content.” The update doesn’t add anything new as such, but it does shift a few things around, with a focus on streamlining user behavior. Pinterest has posted its latest performance update, showing solid increases in both usage and revenue for the third quarter of 2019. First off, on users – Pinterest added 22 million more monthly active users in the quarter, taking it to 322 million overall. As you can see, that equates to a 28% YoY increase, while usage outside the US is growing at an even faster rate. For comparison, Snapchat added 7 million more daily active users in Q3, while Twitter added 6 million. Facebook added 36 million MAU in the same period. One of the biggest tech industry news stories of the week was Google’s pending acquisition of FitBit for $2.1 billion, which will enable the search giant to make a big move into the consumer wearables space. LinkedIn, which is currently seeing ‘record levels’ of engagement, has this week announced another milestone, reaching the new high of 660 million members worldwide. LinkedIn’s leading nation in terms of membership remains the US, where it’s added 8 million new members since February, while it’s also seeing significant growth in India (+7m since Feb) and Brazil (+3m). LinkedIn is also the only major western social media platform that’s able to operate in China, where the platform now has 48 million members.
