When members of the c-suite take the time to establish an active social media presence, the benefits of such can expand far beyond personal branding. A key negative of LinkedIn being taken over by Microsoft back in 2016 was that we lost access to LinkedIn’s regular performance reports, which included detailed insights into member growth and other metrics. Now, we have to settle for smaller updates within LinkedIn’s broader performance reports, which don’t provide the same level of insight, but can still give us some idea as to what’s happening on the platform. This week, as part of Microsoft’s FY20 Q1 report, the company included this brief update on LinkedIn’s current status: As you can see, 22% growth in user sessions, continuing the trend of ‘record engagement’ levels which Microsoft has reported in its past […]
Twitter has released its latest performance report, showing an increase in active users, but a more concerning slow down in ad revenue growth. First, on users – Twitter says that monetizable daily active users (mDAU) increased 17% year-over-year to 145 million for the quarter. Twitter’s mDAU stat, which it first introduced in its Q4 ’18 report, is, it says, a more accurate measure of actual platform performance because it only counts the users to whom Twitter can show ads, as opposed to a more hollow, overall user count. How you view that comes down to perspective – on one hand, reporting mDAU, as opposed to monthly active or daily active […]
Among the various concerns related to the spread of fake news online, and the manipulation of users through misleading, biased and sensationalized content, a key element that clearly needs to be addressed is digital literacy, and better-equipping users to fact-check the things they share before they do so. But that’s not an easy process. Facebook has tried to make users second guess the content they share through fact-check prompts, and added new Page information panels to help users understand who’s behind each message. Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest have also added warnings on certain searches to stop the spread of false information, and each of these measures is having some level of impact. […]

With TikTok on the rise, many are now scrambling in their respective app stores and looking to download the trending app in order to learn what all the fuss is about – and for marketers, whether they can use it to promote their products. I hate to admit, but I’m among the former, and it wasn’t until just recently that I began looking at it from a brand perspective (as opposed to lamenting the fact that everyone can sing and dance except me). Aside from its clear youth appeal, TikTok provides a growing range of ad options, and is taking extra measures to educate its users on how to safely […]
New social media apps are popping up all the time – but what is it that makes one stick when so many others have fallen away? For a new social platform to be successful in the modern digital landscape, it needs to offer a space for a community of people who don’t already have an ideal digital space to connect. It needs to stand on its own, and it has to offer a unique set of tools for its users, while still embodying many of the same traits as the current social giants. Newcomer apps need to find the perfect balance of intrigue and familiarity, as well as value unique to their […]
